Chamois Cream: What Is It? And Why You Need It.
Chamois cream: what is it for and how do you apply it? If you’re a dedicated rider, the right tools in your kit make all the difference.
What is Chamois Cream?
Chamois cream comes as creams, balms, and powders. It’s an antibacterial, viscous layer that reduces friction between skin and clothing to prevent chafing—especially during long rides or strenuous activity.
Where Does It Come From?
In the 1940s, cyclists used shorts with thin leather padding (“chamois”). Creams were created to nourish the fatigued leather and later evolved into today’s anti-chafing creams.
What Is It Used For?
- Friction elimination: Creates a protective layer between fabric and skin.
- Infection prevention: Antibacterial and antifungal agents help keep skin clear.
- Relieves minor aches: Some formulas add a light anesthetic/cooling effect.
- Washes off easily: Unlike petroleum jelly, it washes off skin and kit with soap and water.
Application (5 steps)
- Apply before activity.
- Use about a quarter-size amount.
- Rub liberally on skin (or fabric if preferred).
- Reapply as needed every few hours.
- Wash off with soap and water at day’s end.
